Comedian Chelsea Handler may call E! Entertainment home, but she will be moving to a new network on Sept. 12-if only for one night. On Aug. 19 MTV Networks announced that Chelsea Handler will host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles after being held in New York in recent years. Handler will be the first female to host the show since Roseanna Barr did in 1994 and only the third woman to host overall. Joking about her hosting duties to the New York Times, Handler said, "If there's one awards show that I should be hosting, it's probably this one. My personality probably wouldn't gel with the Emmys or the Golden Globes."
The 35-year-old host of E! Entertainment's Chelsea Lately follows in the footsteps of previous MTV VMAs hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jack Black and, most recently, British comedian Russell Brand, who hosted the 2009 VMAs. Handler released a statement saying, "This has been a huge year for hip-hop and rap, and it is well-known that I have the closest ties with these communities-musically and sexually. I am to rap and hippity-hop, what Warren Buffet is to finance, minus the sex." Some of hip-hop's biggest stars, like Drake, Kanye West and Ne-Yo, will indeed be presenting at the VMAs.
Chelsea Handler's VMA duties will come in between appearances on her current tour, which is in support of her latest bestseller, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. Dubbed the Belvedere Vodka Presents Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang Tour, Chelsea's current road trip kicked off in Chicago in March and was recently extended. "I finished what was supposed to be my Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang national tour and realized I had left out half of the country. It would be neglectful to the rest of the pharmacies throughout the country to stop now," Handler said in a statement when announcing plans to extend her tour. Fans can now get Chelsea Handler tickets to see her through early 2011.
The funny lady is also busy hosting her E! comedy talk show, and recently chatted with guest Jennifer Aniston. Aniston stopped by Chelsea Lately on Aug. 17 to promote her new comedy The Switch, and the pair addressed tabloid rumors that they hand out in L.A., reports the Huffington Post. "There's a story about us that we work out together at Crunch in West Hollywood and then we have vodka-fueled fiestas," Chelsea said. "Why don't we ever do that? We were going to go out on the town, and you decided we were going to find men together," Aniston replied.
Although Chelsea Handler and President and CEO of Comcast (which owns E!) Ted Harbert split earlier this year, Handler won't be able to find men with Jen because she has already found a new man: animal trainer and host of The Animal Planet show Into the Pride Dave Salmoni. Salmoni was a guest on Chelsea Lately and the pair hit it off and have confirmed that they are a couple!
